Councilman Wants Indicted Jersey City Council President to Resign
Posted: Monday, 27 July 2009 11:16AM – Steve Sandberg reports JERSEY CITY, N.J. (1010 WINS) — A Jersey City councilman called for embattled Council President Mariano Vega — who was named in a bombshell federal corruption indictment last week — to step down Monday.
Councilman Steven Fullop turned directly toward President Vega and demanded his resignation during a caucus meeting today.
"Every single vote going forward will be tainted, there is no question about that," Fullop said.
Vega — among the 44 indicted last week in a federal corruption and money laundering probe that rocked New Jersey — told the council caucus that he is innocent and has no plans to resign.
Several other Jersey City officials were named in the indictment including Mayor Jerramiah Healy, who is referred to in the federal complaint as "JC Official 4," though he has not been charged.
