A commitment to community safety requires close attention to policing issues, fire and rescue capabilities, and health and wellness regulations in the city. During his first term in office, Councilman Fulop has taken innovative steps to address each of these areas and make our city’s streets safer for our residents.
These efforts include:
Policing Accomplishments
Police Department Accountability and Reform – demanded department accountability after poor performance from chief
Fire & Rescue Accomplishments
Implemented the first High-Rise Fire Department Unit in the History of Jersey City
Health & Safety Regulations
Passed the first mandatory Day Care Lead Poisoning Testing in the State
The job of making our community safer will continue to be a priority for Councilman Fulop for the next four years. After many improvements to the police department there is still more that can be done. Councilman Fulop believes that merely doubling the size of the uniformed patrol division would not completely address the systematic dysfunction in the department. With effective deployment, and clear lines of accountability, the Jersey City Police Department can still build on the progress that has been made. In his next term, Steven will work to improve the following:
Increase police presence and visibility in neighborhoods and at community events
Implement a “Broken Windows” philosophy of community policing in the JCPD
Restructure police units to prevent overlapping of services while making the department fiscally efficient
Work with mayor to incentivize additional perks for police officers
Work with police chief to include statistics of disorderly people as well as uniform crime stats–narcotics, burglary, etc
Continue to have more street-facing security cameras installed on residential buildings to deter crime
