The following issues are either very near term legislation or are initiatives that Steven plans on addressing:
Initiatives:
Newark Avenue Revitalization - In the September 2005 City Council meeting
Steven will be sponsoring legislation that will reform the business climate on Newark Avenue
from a desolate area lacking foot traffic to an eventual "Restaurant Row". The legislation will
normalize the hours to potentially serve alcoholic beverages in the Restaurant Overlay Zone
while putting strict parameters to encourage restaurants and not a bar atmosphere along Newark
Avenue, The end result will inevitably be a better business climate and a safer environment
with increased foot traffic
Restriction on Single Sale of Alcoholic Beverages and Loose
Cigarette Sales - Legislation currently under review by JC Council. The goal is to restrict
the sale of small single containers of alcoholic beverages in Ward E to curb disruptive
activity by panhandlers
Traffic and Parking Downtown Issues - Steven recently formed a committee
representing many of the community groups downtown to take a comprehensive look at the
traffic patterns and parking issues that infringe on quality of life for downtown residents.
The committee fully expects to recommend legislative changes to the current traffic and parking
structure by the end of calendar year 2005.
Adopt a Fire House Program - Allow private entities to directy allocate funds
to investing and repairing neighborhood fire stations
